Two Toowoomba-based springer spaniels have been credited with protecting Bundaberg’s turtle colony from foxes and other invasive predatory species.
Since 2017 no nests have been robbed of their eggs.
These clever dogs have also been trained to help identify koala colonies.

Yeppoon-based architect Brian Hooper has been awarded the 2022 Building of the Year award for Central Queensland from the Australian Institute of Architects for his design of the Muttaburrasaurus Interpretation Centre. Located in the tiny outback community of Muttaburra, the building was completed in 2021 with the help of locals.

Built from rocks sourced from the surrounding area, the new centre is open 24 hours a day, is unstaffed and is predicted to contribute net zero emissions throughout its existence because it requires no electrical power or maintenance. Even during the hottest of desert days, the building creates its own microclimate through clever use of natural light, ventilation and passive thermal control.
