Open access publishing helps make research findings freely available for anyone to access and view. This can make the research more discoverable and provides pathways for addressing inequal access to knowledge.

‘When science is not openly accessible, it does not, and cannot, reach everyone who needs it.’

Virginia Barbour and Martin Borchet

The theme of this year’s Open Access Week is ‘Community over Commercialisation’. During this week-long, global event we are encouraged to reflect on how we can best prioritise the needs of the communities research is seeking to serve. Questions to consider include:

  • What is lost when a shrinking number of corporations control knowledge production rather than researchers themselves?
  • Can commercialisation ever work in support of the public interest?
  • How can we shift the default toward using more community-minded options?
