The Griffith Archive’s newest online exhibition, Griffith Genesis – The Nathan Dash, provides a brief look at our history of corporate races. Beginning with the Great Griffith Ring Road Race held in 1980, through to 1989’s Spine Sprint and Campus Canter (our first fun run), and finishing with today’s Nathan Dash and corporate fun runs.
Our university’s first competitive sprint race, the Spine Sprint, was held in 1989 at our Brisbane South (Nathan) campus. Competitors ran 500 metres along the spine (Johnson Path). Today’s Nathan Dash, originating from this initial sprint, is also run along Johnson Path. However, this modern-day iteration of our blue riband sprint race is now run over 660 metres and cuts out the gruelling uphill component that was a feature of the Spine Sprint.

Inaugural Campus Canter winner, Nick Adams (1989)
