Monday 11 November is Remembrance Day.

Each year on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Australia joins many other countries in observing a moment’s silence. Originally known as Armistice Day, the observance marks the time and day in 1918 that the armistice ended fighting in World War I.

After World War II, Armistice Day was renamed Remembrance Day, to remember those who died or suffered serving across all wars, conflicts and peace operations. The poppy, the flower that grew in the battlefields of northern France and Belgium, serves as a symbol of their courage and sacrifice.

Remembrance Day is commemorated at memorials across Australia, including at the dedicated memorial to Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service men and women in Brisbane’s Anzac Square. Consider their sacrifices while watching the documentary Griffith Film School students produced telling the story of the Griffith-led dedicated memorial project.

Wherever you are this Monday 11 November at 11am, take a moment to reflect and remember all those who’ve suffered due to war and conflict.
