A unique aspect of creative research practice is its ability to provoke imaginative responses. Often taking artistic forms, creative research typically extends beyond traditional scholarly outputs, engaging a broader audience through entertainment and provocation.
As an example, Imaginary Aviary premiered at the 2023 BLEACH* Festival. Composed and curated by Professor Vanessa Tomlinson, the piece was performed by nine improvisational musicians. Described as a work of ‘speculative ornithology’, it merges creative research with climate adaptation, blending musical improvisation with birdsong. While musical composition has a long history of imitating birdsong, Tomlinson asked her performers to imagine how birds might evolve their sonic language in response to changing habitats.
