Read and publish agreements combine journal subscription and open access publishing fees into a single agreement managed by the Library. This allows Griffith researchers to publish open access in selected journals without additional open access publishing costs.
However, several agreements have annual caps on the number of articles that can be published without extra article processing charges (APCs). These caps are shared across all Australian institutions in the agreement.
Caps for Wiley, Springer Nature and Taylor & Francis are nearing these limits.
To be eligible, articles must be accepted for publication before the caps have been met.
Once the caps are reached:
- standard APCs will apply to open access articles
- articles in subscription-based journals will be behind a paywall unless APCs are paid.
Open access funder mandates
If your research is subject to an open access funder mandate and the caps have been reached, you must either:
- pay the APC
- deposit the article into Griffith Research Online.
Contact the Library for advice on copyright and open access options.
Should authors wait until 2025?
It’s not advisable to delay submissions until 2025, as agreements are being renegotiated and details are uncertain.
Articles accepted after any cut-off date this year must continue to publication without delay as they will not be eligible for OA in any 2025 agreements.
When will the caps be reached?
The Council of Australian University Librarians predicts cap limit dates based on past publishing behaviour. These dates are subject to change. As of 27 August, the forecast dates are:
- Wiley: 28 September 2024 (APC required after this date, with a 10% discount).
- Wiley caps are complex so please contact the Library if you need to discuss your individual situation.
- Springer Nature: 14 October 2024 (APC required after this date)
- Taylor & Francis: 27 October 2024 (APC required after this date)
