Trimester 1 exams are coming up and whether this is your first or last uni exam it can be a stressful time. We’ve compiled some tips for effective exam preparation and strategies to help you navigate exam days.
Planning for exams:
- Check your exam timetable in myGriffith to find the exam time and location – exams can take place in person, online or as an online proctored exam.
- For in person exams, plan for how you will get to the venue. Check your exam timetable to find out which items you will be allowed to take into the exam.
- Determine the exam type so you can prepare accordingly – the exam could be short answer, essay, or multiple-choice.
- Create a study schedule with study time allocated in short chunks to help with retaining information. Remember to schedule some time out from studying to relax and look after your physical and mental health.
Studying for exams:
- Use strategies that work for you, such as revising and summarising notes, making a concept map, creating flash cards, teaching someone else the material or applying the concepts to real world situations.
- Find a study partner or join a study group to support and learn from each other.
- Complete past exams if they are available or create your own questions to practice answering.
- If you are feeling stressed and need support, check out the Online Health and Wellness Centre.
On exam day:
- Start the day with a healthy breakfast and look after yourself with healthy snacks throughout the day.
- Stop studying – it’s hard to retain crammed information and this may increase your stress levels.
- Allow plenty of time to get to the venue, or for online exams set up your computer and workspace well in advance.
- During the exam take time to read through the questions carefully and allow enough time to answer questions and review the answers.
After each exam make sure you take some time out to relax and take a well-earned break.
