Harmony Week (20 – 26 March) is a time dedicated to celebrating Australia’s cultural diversity. It is an opportunity to come together in friendship and community to acknowledge the diverse multicultural nation that we live in; regardless of cultural or linguistic background. Whether you are First Nations, born in Australia or a migrant who’s made Australia home, everyone belongs!

51.1% of Australians were either born overseas or have a parent who was.

How can I celebrate Harmony Week?

There are many different ways you can participate in Harmony Week and celebrate our cultural diversity:

  • Wear orange. For Harmony Week, the colour orange represents meaningful communication, freedom of ideas and mutual respect. Wear something orange this week—or decorate your desk or social media—to show your support.
  • Attend or host an event. There are plenty of events happening in celebration of Harmony Week across Australia. If you’re keen, why not organise and host your own event? It can be as simple as a morning tea in your workplace or an online video call with friends and family.
  • Learn more. Reach out to groups in your community, or start with some research online, and learn more about the diverse people you live, work and go to school with. Harmony Week is the perfect time to educate yourself! How can you support diversity and fight racism?

Griffith is also doing its part to support cultural and linguistic diversity. Students and staff can enrol in the online SBS Inclusion Program through Learning@Griffith to enhance their understanding of issues relating to equity, diversity and inclusion.

More information about Griffith’s diversity initiatives can be found on the Cultural and Linguistic Diversity webpage.
