The Honey Labs team is looking forward to seeing you at our next café meet-up on Monday 16 May at 10 am at Café Rossa, Nathan Campus.

This is our first face to face session at Nathan and we are excited to help you out with your writing and referencing questions.

If you can’t make this session, remember you can join us at our final café meet-up for the trimester at The Library Café at South Bank on 6 June or you can email at any time to [email protected]

Can’t wait until Monday? Here are some hints about spell checkers to check out in the meantime

Are you busy editing your current assessment? Did you know that spell checking software won’t necessarily pick up all your spelling and grammar mistakes? For example, it:

  • can’t help you with some proper names
  • can’t detect the improper use of homonyms, such as ‘their’ and ‘there’
  • may flag words as errors when they are actually correct
  • doesn’t always offer useful spelling suggestions for severely misspelled words.

Just for fun check out this ‘Ode to the Spell Checker‘ by Jerrold H. Zar, or why not try our right word or spelling quizzes to remind yourself of some common mistakes which spell checkers may not identify. One strategy you can use to overcome this problem is to get someone else to check through your work before you submit it.

More writing advice can be found at our Library Writing Support [email protected] Organisation. You can self-enrol at bit.ly/HoneyLabs.
