Are you still feeling a bit confused about VR, AR and MR? To help you get more of a handle on augmented reality (AR), we’ve found a couple of fun and interesting art themed apps. Download and try them out for yourself to experience the technology first hand.
This is one app that does exactly what it says on the label – it is a bit of ‘dumb fun’, allowing you to unleash your inner collage artist as you paste random cut outs into the real world reflected in your camera phone. You can choose from different ‘scenes’, which are essentially collage elements organised by theme. There are a few free scenes, while others need be purchased if you want to go beyond the freebies. Is there any point to Dumb Fun? Probably not – but it looks interesting and will give you a fun and easy experience of augmented reality.
Currently only available on the App Store for iOS devices. Read the App Store page for full specifications.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the BBC Civilisations app offers you the opportunity to get up close and personal with various ancient artefacts. To begin your journey, find a flat surface though your device’s camera to place objects on, then select which object you’d like to take a closer look at. Organised by themes, the choice of artefacts takes you around the world and back through time. The features available to you will depend on the device you are using (for example, the ability to x-ray or restore objects), but even with the most basic settings this is interesting and worth a look.
