GIFT was thrilled to deliver an Industry Research Snapshot seminar with the Department of Innovation, Tourism Industry Development and the Commonwealth Games (DITID) last Wednesday, 23 May at the Southbank campus. The seminar featured five HDR presenters representing the emerging researchers within GIFT: Sera Veda, Johanna Schliephack, Jinyan (Emily) Chen, Bojana Spasojevic and David Fechner. Our HDR presentations were outstanding, and provided an excellent platform to demonstrate GIFT’s research capacities, as well as a foundation for future research collaborations.

In addition, two industry presentations were delivered by Janina Crawford (Manager, Tourism, Investment Attraction, DITID) and Grace Pan (Director, Strategic Development and Research, Tourism and Events Queensland). Presentations were structured as either the 20×20 Pecha Kucha format or the 3-Minute Thesis format to facilitate fast-paced, dynamic and engaging delivery.

The event was designed with three objectives in mind:

1: to allow GIFT to showcase some of our young and emerging researchers;

2: to hear from industry about their research needs and current projects; and

3: to strengthen the networks between GIFT and key industry stakeholders.

Over 40 people were in attendance including representatives from DITID, the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Queensland Tourism Industry Council, Brisbane Marketing, Department of State – Development and Manufacturing, and Trade and Investment Queensland. With an insightful Q&A following each presentation, some thoughtful reflection at the conclusion of the session, and dialogue between GIFT researchers and industry throughout the seminar, there was plenty of productive conversation. We are already looking forward to our next Industry Research Snapshot seminar in early 2019.
