The Griffith University Careers and Employment Service has ramped up their focus on assisting international students through targeted international-focused events, building on their already outstanding service reputation.

The team began the trimester with a Careers Fair that welcomed more than 80 large employers to campus, including international organisations like EY, PwC and Deloitte.

Our international students told us they gained insights into what employers are seeking, built plenty of industry connections, learned about how they can increase their employability and gained a greater perspective on their employment options. It was also great to see international Griffith alumni working at industry partners’ stalls after successfully gaining entry to a graduate program, and other alumni returning to campus to build connections.

The Careers and Employment Service recently hosted three international student events in the space of one week, providing unique access to government representatives and successful Griffith international alumni.

A special career panel Q&A focusing on the topic ‘How to get a job in Australia’ attracted over 200 students to hear from Griffith alumni Johnny Shin (Managing Director and Founding Partner at Solomons Capital), Wing Lai (Chief Concierge at InterContinental Hotels and Resorts) and current Master of IT student Javi Reina (Data Analyst at Pax8).

The panellists’ first-hand experiences as former and current international students, and tips and advice resonated with our international students, helping them develop to their career own plans.

Griffith’s dedicated international student Career Development Consultant Moonie Ha said the speakers “truly inspired many of our international students who don’t know how or where to start their career, especially those who are dreaming of pursuing their career in Australia after graduation.”

Wing Lai, a graduate of Griffith University’s Bachelor of International Tourism and Hotel Management was accepted into one of the world’s most exclusive hotel concierge programs, Les Clefs d’Or. She gave her advice to current students a careers Q&A event.

The Careers and Employment Service team also hosted a Skilled Migration Program information session for international students, with government representatives from Migration Queensland and the Department of Home Affairs offering key information to students looking to work in Australia after they complete their degrees. Students were encouraged to explore the SmartMove website for useful information.

A Careers and Employment Workshop was also held across Griffith University campuses for those looking to go above and beyond, to learn how to develop their employability throughout their degree.
