The 2022 Gold Coast Student Excellence Awards were held on Friday 11 November, recognising outstanding students and the positive contributions they have made within the Gold Coast community.

The Awards were presented by Study Gold Coast and are endorsed by the Office of the Mayor of the Gold Coast.

Griffith University PhD candidate, research assistant, design consultant and business owner Majed Abuseif was presented with the Excellence In Protecting our Environment award.

Originally from Amman in Jordan, Majed started his journey at Griffith University through the Griffith English Language School (GELI) before he entered his Master of Architecture, and then became the first architectural student to receive an international scholarship and continue into a PhD at Griffith University.

Majed’s PhD focuses on green infrastructure implementation in buildings and energy simulation. The research analyses trees and evaluates their performance, and introduces integrated designs to facilitate their implementation.

His Smart Planter Box invention is a new form of green technology enabling plants to grow in extreme environments to generate energy, harvest, recycle and store water. The system can mimic any environment and can be connected to smart city models to help manage urban heat islands. The Smart Planter Box won the People’s Choice Award at the Design Innovation Competition in the United Kingdom earlier this year.

Nominations for the Gold Coast Student Excellence Awards are assessed by a panel comprised of two Study Gold Coast staff members and a representative from the Student Advisory Board. Award winners in each category receive $1,000, along with a personalised trophy and a certificate of appreciation. Award winners also automatically become part of the Gold Coast Student Alumni Network.

Congratulations to all the finalists of the 2022 Gold Coast Student Excellence Awards.
