In 2019, over 60 Griffith Mates were welcomed into our program. The Mates cohort consists of 138 students, from 40 countries, speaking 34 languages, and studying 56 different programs, across 4 campuses. Over the course of 2019, the Griffith Mates volunteered over 1,800 hours during Orientation Week and welcomed over 1,600 new international students at Welcome Lunches. The Griffith Mates held over 70 activities for the year, including a trivia night, a Noosa day trip and the Universal Feast for Harmony Day.

Here are some Trimester 3 highlights:

Bush Care
Community service is a key priority of the Griffith Mates Program. In Trimester 3, The Griffith Mates lead Bush Care in Nathan Campus’ neighbouring Toohey Forest. Over 20 international and domestic students spent their Saturday mornings discovering the local flora and fauna, planting seedlings, and removing rubbish. A highlight was spotting a Koala mum and her joey sleeping in a eucalyptus tree.

Learn to surf
The Griffith Mates took over 30 international and domestic students to a learn to surf session at Greenmount Beach in Coolangatta. Prior to the lesson, they enjoyed exploring the local cafes for breakfast and playing a team game of beach volleyball. In the two-hour lesson, students had some land training before getting in the water to test out their newly acquired skills. A wonderful opportunity to make new friends and try a typical “Aussie” hobby. See the highlights here.
