Griffith University’s Professor of Practice Disaster Management Iain MacKenzie was featured in more than a dozen Australian news media outlets this week when he was asked for his response to the rain and flooding in North Queensland.

Prof MacKenzie reminded journalists and the public that it is now cyclone season and urged people to stay informed during cyclone season by connecting with their local council disaster management dashboard.

He said people should stay in touch with local radio and listen to warnings from local authorities. Prof MacKenzie reminded those affected by flooding that ‘If it’s flooded forget it’.

He reassured the public that Queensland has a very well-rehearsed disaster management system focussed on cooperation and collaboration and that resupply plans were in place.

Prof MacKenzie was delighted that up to one billion dollars has been allocated to disaster mitigation over the next five years, he reminded the public that individuals had a personal responsibility to know what they might face in cyclones or other disasters and be prepared.
