Professor Susanne Becken from the Department of Tourism, Sport and Hotel Management and Griffith Institute for Tourism, was awarded $131,435 by the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) for the project “Mainstreaming climate change adaptation into the tourism sector in Thailand”. Professor Becken will work with partners from the University of Waterloo and PerfectLink (Thailand) to deliver this project that will be implemented in close cooperation with the Thai Government and key tourism stakeholders.
Thailand is in the top 10 most vulnerable countries of the Global Risk Index. At the same time, its tourism industry is growing rapidly, now reaching well over 30 million arrivals. Understanding future climate changes and protecting the industry and communities from adverse impacts is a Government priority, and this project will assist in advancing policies and programs for a more future proof tourism sector.
