Emeritus Professor Colin Mackerras delivers highly successful seminar on Australia-China relations

GRIFFITH ASIA INSTITUTE |

The Griffith Asia Institute (GAI) was delighted to host a highly successful seminar by Emeritus Professor Colin Mackerras, titled Australia–China Relations: An Update, which attracted strong engagement from both in-person and online audiences.

The seminar was attended by more than 30 participants online and 22 attendees in person, reflecting the continued interest in informed, evidence-based discussion on Australia–China relations during a period of significant global uncertainty.

Drawing on decades of scholarly expertise and firsthand experience, Professor Mackerras provided a comprehensive overview of the current state of the Australia–China relationship. His presentation explored the broader international and domestic contexts shaping bilateral relations, including global geopolitical instability, developments in the United States, and recent shifts in Australian domestic politics.

A key theme of the seminar was the increasing securitisation of the Australia–China relationship, particularly through the lens of national security. Professor Mackerras examined the impact of AUKUS on bilateral trust, trade, investment, and education, arguing that while relations remain broadly stable, mutual confidence has been eroded and will be difficult to restore in the near future.

The seminar also addressed major areas of cooperation and tension, including diplomacy, trade, investment, education, and public attitudes. Professor Mackerras highlighted that China remains Australia’s largest trading partner, while noting changing patterns in investment and diversification on both sides. He also reflected on people-to-people links, including education and cultural exchange, emphasising their importance for long-term engagement despite current challenges.

The session concluded with a nuanced assessment of the relationship as overall quite good”, though uneven—improving in some areas while deteriorating in others—and posed the provocative question of how China should ultimately be understood by Australia: foe, rival, friend, or partner.

The lively discussion and strong attendance underscored the value of open, expert-led dialogue on Australia–China relations. GAI extends its sincere thanks to Emeritus Professor Colin Mackerras for a stimulating and thought‑provoking seminar, and to all participants who joined us both online and in person.
